Things to do in Benlamadena
This preferred resort sits on the edge of warm seas of the Mediterranean and is very popular being only 10 minutes by car from Malaga International Airport . Living or holidaying here offers an opportunity to enjoy the major attractions of the resort which is why this is one of the most popular resorts on the Costa del Sol . Whether you enjoy water sports, golfing, strolling around the world famous marina, partaking in the local entertainment spots or just relaxing in the many bars and restaurants, there is something for everybody here.
The resort is divided into three parts, with Benalmadena Pueblo nestling in the foot hills of the Calamorro mountains. This unspoilt white Spanish village is well worth a visit and the stunning Castillo de Colomares is a must for your agenda. This fairytale castle, which seems like something from a Disney film is an incredible mixture of themes taken from many of the most famous castles around the world. The castle was built as a tribute to Christopher Columbus whose voyages of discovery to the New World started from nearby Cadiz . Next to the castle is the Eagles Garden (Jardines de Aguila) where there are daily displays of falconry. A great visit for all the family.
If you are looking for something really peaceful, take a stroll through the walled gardens (The Jardines del Muro) where the water features and tropical plants create a truly tranquil ambiance. Enjoy the fabulous panoramic views of the Costa del Sol .
In the village square (Plaza del España) you will see statue of a little girl (Fuente de la Niña). This has become the symbol of Benalmadena.
If you're interested in Benalmadena's colourful history - many of the natives of the Mediterranean have left their mark here including the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans, Visigoths and Arabs. Thoughtfully the local authority have opened an Archaeological Museum where you can find many artifacts that have been unearthed in and around the area in recent years. More history of Benalmadena Costa can be seen in the three ancient watch towers (the torres vigias) of Bermeja, Torrequebrada and Torremuelle. The Arab-style Bil-Bil Castle , built in 1934 as a private home but now a popular visitor centre, exhibition and concert hall is well worth a visit. If you are thinking of getting married this is the perfect place to tie the knot.
On a more modern note, the Marina (Puerto Deportivo) is the place to be seen and also a great place for people watching. Mix with the locals here and enjoy the entertainment, facilities and magnificent boats. The marina is packed with swish bars, sophisticated restaurants and street cafes. Recently a new commercial centre with many well known shops has opened so no need to go any where else if you don´t want to.
You should try some of the local cuisine, including many different tapas (small dishes a bit like a starter), Gazpacho the famous cold soup and the fresh fish and seafood is a must.
The Sea Life Centre can be found at the entrance to the marina, where you can find many species of sea life and take a fascinating walk through the glass tunnel. A visit to save for a rainy day.
Just up from the marina is the 24 hour square, much favoured by the local youngsters on the weekend, Here you will find another new shopping centre with some famous names trading here and of course the compulsory Macdonalds.
Along the main coast road you will find many top class hotels fronting on to the beautiful promenade and beaches, This is the place to stroll and take in the sights or laze on the beach and soak up the sun. Here again there are many good quality bars and restaurants.
Just up from the beach is the magnificent municipal park (Paloma Pak) with over 200,000 m2 of beautiful landscaped gardens including many cobbled footpaths, an enormous lake and fountain with ducks, swans, pelicans, other water foul and enclosures with a variety of birds and animals.
Adjacent to Paloma Park is the Dolphin Park., where they have daily shows with Dolphins, Sea Lions and Parrots. An absolute must for the kids.
Arroyo de la Miel hosts one of the coasts most favourite family attractions - the Tivoli amusement park which includes thrill rides, carousels, wild west and flamenco shows. In the season the park is open every day from around 2.00pm to 2.00am . Inside there are many rides, amusements, bars, restaurants and live entertainment.
If you have a head for heights, you can catch the cable car here to the Calamorro mountains, around 750m2 above sea level. It´s well worth the trip, the views are breathtaking and on a clear day you can see the Atlas mountains of North Africa .

There are good local markets on Fridays at Tivoli World and behind Palmoa Park on TuesdaysOn Fridays in the Tivoli car park there's a huge open market where you can buy everything from fresh artichokes and antiques to cheap watches (with fake designer tags!)
