Goulbourn Associates Edf Iris, Avda Gamonal Benalmadena Costa Malaga, 29630 Spain
This was once a fortress town created by the Romans, 425m above sea level and dominating the coast from its priveleged position on the side of the Sierra de Mijas.
One of the finest examples of the "white villages" it is still has much of its charm with its little whitewashed houses perched on the hillside. Its narrow streets are restricted to pedestrians and donkeys (who act as taxis). There are many small craft shops selling leather work, pottery and other traditional wares. Mijas has the country's only square bullring (it's also small) and some interesting churches & other monuments giving insight to its past: Roman, Moorish and Spanish. Behind the village is the Mendoza peak rising to 1150m. There are two main roads to Mijas, one through Arroyo and Benalmadena Pueblo and the other north from Fuengirola/Mijas Costa. Mijas is only 8km from the coast but is very different to the coastal towns, still retaining the image of a typical andalucian village. It is full of restaurants, bars and craft shops, a tiny bullring and privately owned bullfight museum, horse & carriage rides and burro taxi - donkey rides (you will need one if you wish to visit the Ermita del Puerto, a small church on the mountainside above the town and unreachable by motor vehicle) and is a wonderful day out that we thoroughly recommend. If you go by car be warned that parking is difficult but not impossible as much of the parking space is taken up with buses on half-day and day excursions.
Mijas Costa
This is the coastal area connected by road through Fuengirola to the mountain settlement of Mijas but is actually the western end of Fuengirola. The Pasadas and Ojen rivers flow down from the mountains and join to form the Fuengirola river which, where it flows into the sea, divides Fuengirola from Mijas Costa. Indistinguishable from Mijas Costa is La Cala next door which has a blue flag for one of the cleanest beaches in Europe. Here there are over 200 urbanizations, more than anywhere else on the Costa del Sol, and which feature a wide range of sports facilities including golf, tennis, sailing and windsurfing. The beautifully landscaped golf courses here are among the finest in the world.
